The Mandalorian’s Katee Sackhoff Has Found The Way… to DFW

Katee Sackhoff will be appearing at Fan Expo Dallas 2022, this weekend at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. Star Wars fans will recognize the actress as the Mandalorian renegade Bo-Katan in the animated series Clone Wars and most recently her reprisal of the role in the hit series The Mandalorian. The actress is poised to play one of the main roles in the upcoming series of The Mandalorian, as she potentially aims to challenge Mando for the Dark Saber.

Other sci-fi junkies will also recognize Sackhoff for her time as Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica. However, the actress has made a name for herself in many other genres as well with roles in shows like Longmire, The Flash, and many more. With such a large cinematic fingerprint, we wanted to talk the Sackhoff before she headed to Dallas. See what she has to say about what’s in store for her character on The Mandalorian and her reflections about her time in some of her more notable roles.

Sackhoff will be appearing Friday and Saturday at Fan Expo Dallas. Fans will have to opportunity to meet her during this time as she signs autographs and answers some of their questions during panels!

You grew up a huge Star Trek fan, yet you are now heavily embedded in the Star Wars franchise. There is generally a pretty big divide amongst the two fanbases. Are you still a Trekkie or has your time as Bo-Katan changed your tune?

Once a Trekkie always a Trekkie right? Honestly, I love both franchises and I don’t feel like choosing a side is necessary, although I understand how dedicated both fan bases are. I have such fond memories of watching both with my dad as a kid and to be a part of Star Wars is such a huge honor for me. Now I just need to actually be in a Trek movie and my dad would be forever happy!

Bo-Katan was able to rule a united Mandalore people by merely having the Darksaber, regardless of whether she removed her helmet or not. Similarly, Mando has not lived according to the ancient creed but has the weapon. However, he is ostracized by all for his actions. Why was Bo-Katan so accepted but Mando, who has even more right to rule since he won the Darksaber in battle, is outcast? If unable to answer, will we see more of this explained in the upcoming season?

In order to answer this question we need to go back to Clone Wars and Rebels. Bo-Katan has never lived in a Mandalore where the mainstream belief was to cover one’s face at all times. She says as much, calling Din Jarin’s Mandalorians “religious zealots”.

So your question is a complicated one from completely different ideological and belief systems. How much time do you have!?! There may or may not be some insight into this in season.

You’ve enjoyed Bo-Katan’s character arc, from “starting out on the wrong side of the fight” to “broadening her mind and being open to change”. You even said you see her as a “metaphor for life and forgiveness”. Although she has been transformed into something of a heroine figure thanks to Rebels and The Mandalorian, the final episode of The Mandalorian sets up a conflict between her and Mando for the right to rule, potentially regressing Bo-Katan’s storyline back to that of a villain. If so, doesn’t that plot have the potential to damage everything established by the character thus far?

Good and evil. Hero and villain. These are all very simple definitions, and Bo-Katan is far from simple! I don’t think Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau know how to create simple characters. You’ll just have to wait and see what happens in season 3 to decide whether Bo evolves or regresses.

If you had to choose 2 Star Wars characters (other than Bo-Katan) that you identify the most with, who would they be and why?

I’d have to say Padme has always been a favorite of mine. Strong, smart, fiercely loyal, and independent. I love her. And probably Hera purely out of love for the character. I adored her in Clone Wars and Rebels.

You’ve been a part of multiple franchises, spanning television, movies, and gaming. Which did you enjoy working on the most? Are there any roles you feel didn’t get quite as much attention as deserved?

I’ve had such a full career that far exceeds any expectations I truly ever had. Dreams and goals yes but not expectation. It’s overwhelming at times to think I’ve made a living as an actor for almost 25 years.

I have so many fond memories of all the characters and feel most of them had a beautiful run. However, there are couple I’d love to go back to so to speak. I love and miss Amunet Black from The Flash. The character is insane and I have had some of the funniest days in my career playing her. Also, Vic Moretti from Longmire. I still believe the potential for movies is strong and we are missing an opportunity here. The fan base wants it and I know the cast wants it. I really wish the powers that be could find a way to make it happen. I feel I’m not done with Vic Moretti and miss her terribly.

You’ve done voice work or played roles in The Flash, Spider-Man: Edge of Time, Batman: Year One, and The Bionic Woman. Were you a big comic book fan growing up? Who is your favorite superhero and why?

I’ve always loved comic books. I never really had any favorites but used to steal whatever my brother had lying around.

I’ve always wanted to see more Typhoid Mary! What a great character!

Battlestar Galactica was well received by critics and fans alike. However, the finale left many with mixed feelings. Did you agree with how everything concluded or is there something that you would have changed?

The only thing I would’ve changed is that we were canceled by Sci-fi Universal way too soon! I always thought that was a major mistake made for the wrong reasons but as far as story is concerned, I loved what Ron Moore and all the writers gave us.

What do these conventions mean to you? Is there anything you are looking forward to doing in Dallas?

Conventions have been a huge part of my life and career since the very beginning. The fans are so important and that interaction is incredibly fun for me. I owe my career to my fans and I’m always so grateful to the people who take the time to come and see me. I have almost no spare time to do anything in Dallas outside the convention, but I’m a steak and potatoes kinda gal so I am looking forwarded to treating myself to a delicious Texas dinner while I’m there.
