Cornell University is a private research university that provides an exceptional education for undergraduates and graduate and professional students. Plant Biology, School of Integrative Plant Science The Frank Lab studies plant grafting biology of plant grafting. Students frequently present their work at Cornell’s annual Student Symposium or at professional conferences, and some have contributed to papers in scientific journals as undergraduates. All of our biology faculty are involved in long-term research projects and work collaboratively with students both during the school year and during the Cornell Summer Research Institute. We study photosynthesis and RNA editing in plants as well as the molecular basis of a disease using white blood cells and plasma from subjects. EEB faculty and students pursue topics across a broad set of interlinked fields, including ecosystem biology and biogeochemistry, community ecology and population biology, organismal biology, chemical and molecular ecology, population genetics and genomics, speciation and macroevolution. Molecular Biology and Genetics My laboratory uses cutting edge single molecule imaging, biochemistry, and molecular biology to understand how proteins organize and move on DNA. Although grafting has been used as a tool to improve plant performance for over 2,000 years, there are many open questions about what makes particular graft combinations successful, how graft junctions are formed, and what moves between grafted organ systems. The overall human health relevance of my research program is to understand biological pathways that prevent the loss of information stored within the eukaryotic genome. Alon Keinan studies how human genetic variation has arisen from evolutionary history. His research focuses on elucidating the history of modern human populations and on developing computational methods for searching for genes important in human biology. The faculty members of the Graduate Field of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology come from a variety of Departments across campus, including (but not limited to) Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Entomology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Natural Resources and the Environment, Neurobiology and Behavior, Plant Biology, and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.
