Review: Fan Expo Dallas 2021 Delivers

After a year sabbatical due to Covid, Fan Expo Dallas returned to DFW and it did not disappoint. Texas’s pandemic numbers climbed in the weeks leading up to the convention creating some doubt that it would actually take place this year. Several high profile guests dropped out at the last minute, increasing these fears. Luckily, the pandemic numbers leveled out a bit and Fan Expo Dallas was able to secure several big guests in an extremely short time period. Surprisingly, the result was one of the best cons Fan Expo has thrown in recent years.

There was a large number of attendees but not too many to feel overbearing, a great showing and reasonable number considering the circumstances. Fan Expo did a phenomenal job organizing and regulating the event. Safety precautions were also in place to meet Dallas County’s restrictions. Audiences partook in panels with celebrities from The Office, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Myth Busters, and many other shows. The artist sketch duel has become one of Fan Expo’s biggest attractions. The audience suggests random items or settings to be included in drawings while artists improvise them into their drawings of famous characters.

The younger visitors also had plenty to do. Kids could be sorted into a Hogwarts house from Harry Potter or learn to wield a lightsaber in a training academy where students could choose whether they wanted to join the Jedi or Sith. As always, there was a children’s fan area that hosted a plethora of events.

There were easily enough vendors to match past events and the focus this year was heavily on the fans. The show floor had at least five stations for photo ops with popular scenes/props from some of cinema’s greatest hits. Of course this was in addition to the countless opportunities to take pictures with cosplayers representing almost every aspect of fandom. Take a look below to see some of our favorite attendees from this year’s Fan Expo Dallas!
