Deep Ellum Arts Festival 2013 Starts This Friday
The 19th annual Deep Ellum Arts Festival is scheduled to transform six city blocks of Main Street in the Deep Ellum entertainment district into a spectacular visual and performing arts festival featuring 200 juried decorative and visual artists from throughout the country, 100 original bands and singer/songwriters and performance artists performing only original music from five different stages, bountiful food and drink. An “Arty Party” for all of the senses, this unique gathering with tantalizing sights, sounds and flavors showcases everything that makes Deep Ellum an interesting and evolving neighborhood in the Metroplex.
Deep Ellum Arts Festival 2013 to Feature:
There will be 200 decorative and visual fine artists from around the country will have their distinctive one-of-a-kind works on display. Festival attendees can stroll through displays of cutting-edge decorative arts and admire, commission, and purchase the art of sculptors, muralists, jewelers, painters, and fine artists; some of whom will be creating pieces on the spot.
Deep Ellum Arts Festival 2013 Free Concerts:
More than 100 bands and singer/songwriters will perform all original music from five separate open-air stages, reflecting the ever-evolving music scene in North Texas. All stages will be rocking simultaneously with an eclectic mix of genres, including Texas Roadhouse Blues, Roots, Rock, Rockabilly, Indie, Punk, Jazz Fusion, Big Band, Country, Reggae, Singer Songwriters, and other “genre-breaking” bands.

- The Effinays, Dallas’ most up & coming reggae-fusion sound.
- John Gaar – a captivating, soulful singer with a deft and provocative guitar style that converges to create a powerful and indelible impression.
- With rotating instruments and multiple lead vocalists, Fox and the Bird plays the types of songs you could sing along to the first time you hear them.
- Kirk Baxley is a soulful, genuine performer rooted in honest song-writing with a raw, gospel influenced voice.
- For high-energy folkin’ excitement that’s been making Dallas dance for several years , there’s really none better than Parallel Play.
- Brave Combo is returning to the festival as a favorite, “America’s Premier Dance band and a rollicking, rocking, rhythmic global journey”.
- And before they head out to Rock USA 2013 to join a ridiculous lineup including Saliva, Sevendust, and Van Halen to name a few – Midnight Empire will melt Deep Ellum’s faces!
- Also featured are Christian Brooks, Buggaboo, The Jones’ Band, Chris Watson, Reinventing Jude, The BoomBachs, Matt Barron, Playdough & DJ Sean P, Confederate Soul, Nicholas Altobelli & the Gigawats, Jonothan Fox, and many more.
Deep Ellum Texas Village & Stage, on Crowdus St. between Main and Commerce features signature Deep Ellum restaurants selling samples of their most popular dishes accompanied by local visual and performing artists displaying and playing the original compositions one would expect to find in the “hood”.
Local restaurants this year include Lemongrass, Mama Faye’s BBQ, Buzzbrews, Cane Rosso and others.
Deep Ellum Arts Festival 2013 Food & Drink:
Festival concessionaires will also be serving a myriad of culinary delights throughout the festival including corny dogs, turkey legs, BBQ, Mexican, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Cajun, American, and Italian cuisine, crepes and specialty desserts and health-foods. Beer, wine, and soft beverages will also be available for purchase. In a restricted Festival Lounge cocktails can be purchased. In support of festival vendors and permit regulations, no outside food or beverages may be brought into or consumed on the festival site.
Artists Underground is part of a visual and performing collective curated by local favorites Three Of One Arts (The Davies Brothers), that will showcase a cutting edge selection of their work and that of their top picks for up and coming names in underground art such as Beau Ethridge, Joe Skilz, Infinity Crew, and many others. Also featured is the Just.Us.League, a volunteer freestyle art squad of 11 artists who will paint collaboratively on the same canvas at the same time, as well as live body painting, graffiti demonstrations, and eclectic performance artists. The Just.Us.League auctions off their work to benefit different charitable causes.
Street Performers throughout the festival will entertain with an engaging and exciting mix of theatricality. You will find jugglers, mimes, sidewalk performers and other whimsical characters roaming the festival throughout the weekend.
Deep Ellum Arts Festival 2013 Pet Parade:
Pet owners are invited to take their “Best Friends” on a tail-wagging promenade down Main Street for the popular annual Deep Ellum Pet Parade. Register to be eligible for prizes at the Deep Ellum Bark Park starting Sunday at 11:00am, or just join the parade anywhere along the way. Awards and pet-related activities will take place near the intersection of Main Street and Malcolm X starting at 12:00 noon. Well-trained dogs are welcome to the festival all day Sunday only.
The Deep Ellum Community Association and The Deep Ellum Foundation, 501(C)(3) organizations benefit from this annual free-to-attend community festival.
