I’ll admit, I’ve never actually attended a true Oktoberfest. I’d heard about the ones smattered across Europe in celebration of Germany each fall, but even growing up in Dallas I never had the opportunity to attend the city’s most celebrated and cultural events. When I received the invitation to dine at the Oktoberfest-themed Chamberlain’s Brau House last Thursday evening, I jumped at the chance.

New Orleans-based Dinner Lab, which “connects guests with new ideas in food by hosting pop-up events with emerging culinary talent to get feedback on what works and what doesn’t” launches today in Dallas. This membership-based club gets immediate feedback on your likes and dislikes from a regional level, then creates special suppers in secret locations that are hosted often by locally-based up-and-coming, innovative, chefs.

Chef John Tesar fired an early morning tweet at Dallas Morning News lead food critic, Leslie Brenner, for a less than stellar critique and star rating.

At around 6:30 p.m., our evening began at the Automotive Building. This is where they held Taste of the Town, the VIP Indoor Tasting Experience and main attraction for many of the night’s attendees. Upon entering, we were greeted by other businesses symbolic of the area and Dallas culture. Imagine the large, car-filled, air-conditioned concrete building from the State Fair’s car show. Now remove the cars and envision large booths and tables on said floor with the likes of Albertsons, the Farmer’s Market and other neighborhood tchotchke shops.

Celebrating its fifth year in Dallas, the largest French festival in North Texas has returned. On Monday, July 14th from 6-10 PM, you can experience everything that French culture has to offer without ever leaving Oak Cliff. Highlights of the day include a mussels competition, Vespa rally, crepe stands, petanque courts (what is petanque? Click here), French music, dancing, and wine tasting.
