There is a fresh new face in the Dallas community who is serving up sensational desserts you will never forget. With a spoonful of creativity and a dash of sweetness, we would like to introduce you to this awesome pastry chef, Kathy Nguyen. Kathy Nguyen is the founder and creator of Cultivated Cakes here in Dallas.

Custom cakes are becoming a big trend here in the Dallas area. No longer just for weddings or birthday parties, consumers are ordering customized cakes for all kinds of reasons such as major sporting events, backyard bbq parties, company parties, and to celebrate when the new season of a favorite tv show is launched; and Kathy is one of the best at making custom designed cakes in the region. Her cakes are expertly crafted artistic pieces that invoke the imagination and make a statement.

From a young age, Kathy has always enjoyed baking, but during her early twenties was when she decided to follow her passion of baking and pursue pastry masterpieces in her studio apartment. Her Dallas business quickly grew from creating delightful treats for her family and friends to now crafting hundreds of customized cakes and pastries for special occasions all over the metroplex.

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing Kathy and got the scoop of what her cake business is all about:

“When I was in middle school I took a Home EC class and fell in love with baking. Then as years passed I started customizing cakes for my family. It first started with adding a few menial decorations and eventually through their encouragement I started self-teaching myself how to artfully make custom figures and florals. It makes me happy to be a part of these special occasions and make me happier when customers come back.”

Some of Kathy’s favorite cakes include character cakes because she loves the challenge it brings. But if asked what her favorite flavor might be, hands down she enjoys the funfetti and all the ideas that come with its richness.

Cultivated Cakes offers desserts for all ages including some of her signature designs like whimsical unicorns, elegant fondant floral pieces, and charming movie and TV characters to name just a few.

My two favorite cakes so far are the Game of Thrones cake she made.

Me: “How long have you been baking?”
Kathy: “It’s so difficult to pinpoint an exact date, but I learned how to bake in middle school home ec class. Let’s say about 11 years old!”

Me:How long have you been in the Dallas area?”
Kathy: “My entire life! Born in Cali, raised in Texas :)”

Me: “What started you making decorative cakes?”
Kathy: “Friends and family that I baked for started asking me if I could customize my cakes more. It first started with adding a few menial decorations and eventually through their encouragement I started self-teaching myself how to artfully make custom figures and florals.”

Me: “Why do you make decorative cakes?”
Kathy: “It makes me happy to be a part of these special occasions and it makes me happier when customers come back.”

Me: “What is your favorite cake(s)? And why?”
Kathy: “Character cakes, I love the challenge! But if we’re talking flavor, it’s definitely funfetti because it’s something basic that you can jazz up with colorful sprinkles.”

Me: “How much does a typical cake cost?”
Kathy: “That’s really hard to answer; because of the nature of custom cakes, prices will vary depending on size/decor.”

When ordering a cake from Cultivated Cakes, customers will receive their choice of size ranging from 6” cake tier to larger 3 tiers with customized layers. All cake ingredients are made from scratch and range from chocolate to jamocha me crazy that fill each layer deliciousness.
