A special NasherKids passport is a great keepsake from the event, offering incentives for repeat visits and additional take-home art activities.

The Nasher Sculpture Center brings art world speakers for conversations or lectures about sculptural themes. Learn about the ever-expanding definition of sculpture and the thought-process behind some of today’s most innovative contemporary artwork, architecture and design.

Kathryn Andrews creates sculptures, prints, performances and other works that explore how materials exist in systems, or economies, of representational relationships.  Her highly finished forms draw from a minimalist language, and are often conceptually activated by the inclusion of found, acquired, and rented objects.  In her practice, the readymade not only serves as a vessel through which materials are imported from the outside world, but as way to examine pre-existing social contracts and infrastructures.

Sightings: Erick Swenson

Dallas-based artist Erick Swenson has received national and international acclaim for his beguiling sculptures.  A graduate of theUniversity of North Texas and member of the Good/Bad Art Collective in Denton c. 1999–2000, Swenson first gained international attention when his work was featured in the 2004 Whitney Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of Art in New York.  His sculptures now grace the collections of the Whitney, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Saatchi Collection in London.

Rendered with a naturalist’s sensitivity and incredible precision, the works often present fantastic vignettes of animals ensnared in strange, sometimes devastating circumstances, or quietly poetic scenes that evoke the beauty and tragedy of nature, as well as our own human condition.  Often shocking in their realism and precise details, the works take months, sometimes years, for the artist to fabricate, making new work by Swenson incredibly rare.  The exhibition features two sculptures fresh from the artist’s studio, ‘Schwärmerei’ and ‘Scuttle,’ and a recent work, Ne Plus Ulta’ making its Texas debut.

The Nasher Sculpture Center has invited internationally-renowned Brazilian artist, Ernesto Neto, to create a new work, entitled Kink, for the large, upstairs Renzo Piano-designed gallery. Often working on the scale of architecture, Neto creates experiential environments from sheer mesh fabric, which dramatically alters our environment and invites interaction inside the organic, womblike, and elemental installation

Blue Star Museums Program
Through Labor Day, September 3, 2012

The Nasher Sculpture Center is pleased to offer free admission to active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day in conjunction with the Blue Star Museums Program.  First launched in the summer of 2010, Blue Star Museums is a partnership among Blue Star Families, the National Endowment for the Arts, and more than 1,000 museums across America. The free admission program is available to any bearer of a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), a DD Form 1173 ID card, or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card, which includes active duty military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard), National Guard and Reserve members and up to five immediate family members.
