The DMA is free all weekend so take advantage of the tours, lectures and films, as well as access to three exhibits. (Although, I expect a lot of people will be doing the same so expect some crowds.)

Celebrate the final weekend of Summer Spotlight, Willie Doherty & Private Universes and the premiere of All the World’s a Stage.

Among the exhibit of All the World’s a Stage will be a group of pastel ballet dancers by Edgar Degas. Growing up in pink tights and a black leotard I became very familiar with Degas’ ballet dancers. Years of staring at Degas posters that lined the wall in cheap frames from Michael’s, doing thousands of plies and arabesques at the bar- I got to know them well.  I would see original paintings and statues of his work 9 years later in Paris at the Musée d’Orsay (image at the bottom of this post). It was magical and surreal- some might call it a complete circle.

Among other highlights in the exhibit is Pablo Picasso’s The Guitarist, and Shiva Nataraja, an 11th-century sculpture from India of the Hindu Lord of the Dance. I don’t have any magical stories for those but perhaps you do! Feel free to share them!
