Geek is the New Chic: Dallas ComicCon 2014 to Bring Out the “Cool Kids” May 16th – 18th
It’s hard out there to be a geek. You’re running from bullies, you’re intimidated by the opposite sex, and though you are the smartest person in room, it sure doesn’t get you invited into a lot of parties or new Facebook friend requests. So what’s a North Texas Geek to do?
That was then. This is now.
Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, Arrow, Orphan Black, and The Big Bang Theory are the most popular shows on television. People are willing to wait in long lines for the latest Apple iPhone. Everyday people can become famous (or infamous) thanks to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. A simple idea that could be used as a mobile app on a smartphone can make you rich overnight. And Superheroes, Young Adult adaptations, Fantasy, and Sci-Fi films have dominated the Hollywood box office for over fourteen years and counting. (Who’s not seeing The Amazing Spider-Man 2?)
Now being a geek is popular. So much so, it has become a part of everyone’s lives now. Since when does Kevin Durant wear eyeglasses? How many people remember seeing Olivia Munn dress up as Slave Leia? Katy Perry looked so brave wearing braces on her teeth. These are athletes, celebrities, and musicians that I’m taking about (the cool kids), and they’re embracing geek culture as their own.
You know you’ve found a home where you can quote scenes from GoT and everybody is listening to you word for word. When did the CDC develop a preparedness strategy to combat zombies? How excited are you that JJ Abrams is directing the next Star Wars movie? Are you DVR-ing Attack on Titan this weekend? And what’s the best Cosplay outfit to wear in Texas weather? Those are a few of the things that you can expect to see or talk about when you come to Dallas ComicCon 2014.
What’s great about a ComicCon is that its about the things that you’re never too old to outgrow. We are talking about Comic Books. We are talking about Action Figures. We are talking about so much swag that you’ll need a wheelbarrow to carry this out. Its one thing get a celebrity autograph, and then to have a selfie picture taken with them, but how often do you get the chance to have your picture taken with your idol in front of the DeLorean Flux Capacitor from Back to the Future?
At Dallas ComicCon you can participate in panels and Q&A sessions with artists and actors in the business. It wouldn’t be a ComicCon without an exhibit of the latest tech, video games, TV shows and films coming to you in the near future. And if you’re a talented artist who can’t write or a talented writer who can’t draw, the workshops being held is just what the doctor ordered. And it would definitely would not be a ComicCon without Cosplay. Dress up as your favorite superhero. How about a super villain? William Shatner will be in Dallas Comic Con this weekend, so why don’t dress up as a Priceline negotiator.
