Featuring masterworks from the Raymond and Patsy Nasher Collection, Rediscoveries: Modes of Making in Modern Sculpture traces the roots of new methods of conceiving and making sculpture over the past 125 years.  In the upper galleries of the museum, visitors will find beloved and familiar works from different historical eras combined in new and unexpected ways alongside sculptures never before displayed at the Nasher Sculpture Center, most notably Richard Serra’s 1969 Inverted House of Cards. Created by leaning four large Cor-Ten steel plates against one another, Serra’s iconic prop piece uses natural forces to transform a child’s game into a weighty meditation on mass, force, and endurance.

Comprised of text sculptures from the early 1960s through the mid-1970s, Sculpture in So Many Words: Text Pieces 1960–80 continues the examination of sculptural concerns presented in Rediscoveries by tracing the legacy of Marcel Duchamp’s radical reimagining of what constitutes a work of art.  The resulting image-free works shed fresh light on the intellectual foundations underpinning much of contemporary art.

Continuing the Nasher Sculpture Center’s ongoing

Sightings series of installations and architectural interventions by contemporary artists will be an installation by London-based artist Eva Rothschild.  An intricate network of painted piping will address the transitional space of the Nasher’s 90-foot-long entrance bay.  Running up the walls, along the floor, and over furniture, the installation will thoroughly inhabit the space, heightening and redefining our experience of the architecture.

The Nasher Sculpture Center brings art world speakers for conversations and lectures about sculptural themes. Learn about the ever-expanding definition of sculpture and the thought-process behind some of today’s most innovative contemporary artwork, architecture and design.

Toward the end of the 1950s in New York, the term Neo-Dada surfaced to label Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and a handful of other young artists whose work seemed sharply at odds with Abstract Expressionism.  Two projects were credited with stimulating a renewed interest in Dada:  the 1951 publication of The Dada Painters and Poets, edited by Robert Motherwell, and the 1953 Dada exhibition organized by Marcel Duchamp at the Sidney Janis Gallery.  This talk will explore the complexities of Duchamp’s and Motherwell’s engagements with Dada and their effects on the phenomenon that came to be known as Neo-Dada.

Catherine A. Craft, Ph.D. is Adjunct Assistant Curator for Research and Exhibitions at the Nasher Sculpture Center.  A respected art historian, curator, lecturer and writer specializing in 20th-century art, Dr. Craft comes to the Nasher from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where she was as senior research fellow.

In celebration of the opening of Sightings: Eva Rothschild, the Nasher Sculpture Center presents a special Art ‘til Midnight at the Nasher featuring the first public opportunity to view the new installation, as well as two back-to-back concerts in the Garden featuring Bravo, Max! and The O’s. Nasher Cafe by Wolfgang Puck will offer picnic baskets available for purchase ahead of time, as well as made-to-order salads, sandwiches, snacks. Reserve a picnic basket at 214.242.5144. The Dallas Arts District will also feature Aurora from 8 pm to midnight.  Aurora features an installation of lights, sound, performance and projection art, and a variety of food trucks stationed throughout the district.

Born in Dublin in 1971, Eva Rothschild has received acclaim for works that reshape the legacy of minimalist and post-minimalist sculpture to offer evocative, open-ended experiences to the viewer. In 2011, she created Empire for the Public Art Fund, New York, placing a monumental, multidirectional archway out of steel painted with brightly colored stripes at one of the entries to Central Park. For the Nasher’s Sightings series, Rothschild will make an intricate network of painted piping that similarly addresses the transitional space of the Nasher’s entrance bay.

Rothschild has exhibited widely at museums, including Hepworth Wakefield, Tate Britain and Kunsthalle Zurich. Her work is included in the collections of the Tate Gallery London, the Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin.

An artist and a film connoisseur join forces to present a multidimensional take on the word “casting.” How can the casting process impact the outcome of a sculpture? How does the casting of a film shape our perception of its characters? You are invited to add your voice to a conversation connecting the divergent worlds of sculpture and film. Cast your preconceptions aside and join us for a lively discussion.

Soundings: New Music at the Nasher

Midori Goto comes to the Nasher Sculpture Center with pianist Özgür Aydin to open the 2012-2013 Soundings season. This preview performance of their upcoming Carnegie Hall recital celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of Ms. Goto’s debut there, and an artistic life defined by an intense commitment to exploring and sharing music.

This 2nd Annual Event for the Nasher Sculpture Center Avant-Garde Society is an evening  in the Nasher Garden celebrating Texas artists with a panel discussion, auction and live entertainment.  This year, Nasher’s Chief Curator, Jed Morse and the Avant-Garde Society Executive Committee are proud to present a Texas 2-Step featuring 3 Artist Couples who have worked collaboratively to create a piece of art to be auctioned off at this event.  Proceeds will go to support the Nasher Sculpture Center’s Sightings Series.
