Dallas Comic Show 2018 Review – Small Venue, Giant Fan Experience
Last weekend DFW con enthusiasts eagerly headed to Richardson in their final attempt to attend a local, comic convention in 2018. The Dallas Comic Show was held at the Richardson Civic Center and continued to display just how much it has grown in recent years. We have seen Dallas Comic Show blossom in popularity, so we decided it was about time that we see what all the excitement is about.
If you head out to Dallas Comic Show expecting some type of giant production, you will be in for quite a shock. The convention is currently held in the hallway and multiple rooms of a single floor in the civic center. That being said, do not let the size deter you as this smaller convention has loads to offer and an atmosphere that surpasses many larger cons.
It doesn’t take much to see that Dallas Comic Show focuses on the fan experience rather than attacking your wallet. Attending conventions usually takes quite the financial toll between the parking fees, expensive ticket prices, and ridiculous celebrity fees. This is definitely not the situation here.
Dallas Comic Show offers free parking and reduced ticket pricing on Sunday. Not only that, but the celebrity guests even had reasonable pricing on their end. There was even a vending truck out front that offered free samples. It was a nice change of pace from the price gouging of larger events.
As I said before, the unique atmosphere was one of my favorite parts of the show. Everywhere you turned people were interacting with each other, fans and celebrities alike. Instead of being bogged down behind unrelenting lines of fans, artists and guests frequently roamed around to see what vendors had to offer. Fans were able to speak with their favorite stars without feeling like they are being pressured to hurry about their way.
If you didn’t get a chance to ask whatever question was on your mind while walking about, the panels gave plenty of opportunities to have every inquiry answered. There was even a Stan Lee memorial panel to commemorate his life by sharing their favorite memories of the comic legend. Cosplayers found their share of the spotlight as well with a costume contest held the first afternoon.
Staying true to its name, Dallas Comic Show put a large emphasis on comic books. There were people on site to grade comic books and options to buy just about any type that you could think of. Of course, you can’t forget the special guests in attendance. There were a large number of comic book artists available to sign their work or even create new illustrations for their fans.
I am eager to see how Dallas Comic Show will grow from here, and hope to be able to attend again in 2019. The momentum that this particular convention exudes is certainly something to keep an eye on. If you haven’t made it out before, I would highly suggest looking into it next year. Until then, here are a few of our favorite moments and costumes from our Dallas Comic Show weekend!
